Frequently Asked Questions about BMI

BMI is a numerical value calculated from your weight and height using the formula: BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m). It is widely used as a quick indicator of whether your weight falls within a healthy range.

Divide your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. Example: weight 75 kg, height 1.75 m → BMI = 75 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 24.5.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a normal BMI as 18.5 – 24.9. Values below 18.5 indicate underweight, while values above 25 indicate overweight or obesity.

The standard BMI formula does not differentiate by gender or age. However, for children, pregnant women and adults over 65, results should be interpreted with extra care and ideally reviewed by a doctor.

BMI is a useful starting point but not a complete picture. It does not account for fat distribution, muscle mass or bone density. For a more accurate assessment, consult a doctor or dietitian.

A BMI above 30 is classified as Class I obesity. Values above 35 indicate Class II obesity, and above 40 indicate Class III (morbid) obesity. At these levels, medical consultation is strongly advised.

Yes. People with high muscle mass (e.g. athletes) may have a high BMI without excess body fat. This is why BMI should be considered alongside other indicators such as waist circumference and body fat percentage.

Once every 1–3 months is sufficient, or whenever you experience a significant change in weight. Checking too frequently rarely provides useful additional information and may cause unnecessary anxiety.
